Vertical wall waterproofing systems have to stop somewhere! Where they change over to a different system, such as an above-grade building envelope system or a plaza deck system, or if they end completely, is known as an at-grade termination or transition. These points are often critical locations where extra care needs to be taken and extra inspections need to be made to ensure they are detailed and sealed properly.
At-grade terminations and transitions can range from very simple to quite complex – for example, EPRO has over 90 details for these construction features!
Why are these details important?
As the industry, products, and technology have evolved, so has our understanding of why buildings leak and where the leaks originate. Where a waterproofing system ends or transitions to another is one of the most vulnerable points of the system. Remember, water wants to get in, and it is the system’s job to keep it out. This is why ensuring that termination or transition points are seamless – and watertight.
In a pre-construction meeting, relevant trades can be made aware of these locations and whether the waterproofing will end or transition.. This way, when it comes time to terminate the waterproofing or seamlessly transition to another product or system, everyone is aware of the challenges involved with this part of the project and any special detailing requirements. With good communication and coordination, installation and construction can stay on schedule and watertight!
