This is our second blog post in our “All about ICF and Waterproofing” series. First, we discussed ICF construction and why it needs top-notch waterproofing. Here, we will discuss EPRO products that are well-suited to this type of construction.
ICF as a Substrate
It is important to note that when working with ICF forms, substrate preparation is key to success in regard to waterproofing application and also maintaining the integrity of the forms. The insulation is a soft substrate which means that it is more susceptible to damage, and any punctures or dents may allow water into the concrete core – which would prove disastrous for the building foundation. We want to keep the water out!
Additionally, the ICF substrate needs to be clean, smooth, and free of debris, not only to provide the ideal surface for waterproofing but to also prevent any damage from occurring as the system is installed.
ICF blocks look like legos and fit together pretty closely. Yet unlike theses little plastic blocks, there can be gaps between them, which can expose the concrete. Extra care needs to be taken to ensure that these spaces are adequately protected to keep water out and prevent migration into the concrete core.
Layers are the way to go
EPRO has a suite of waterproofing systems that are comprised of several layers, thereby offering increased water protection. The E.Series line combines multiple waterproofing materials into one system, creating redundancy and scalability to meet any site condition.
EPRO’s E.Proformance is a product well-suited to ICF foundations. It is ideal for below-grade applications not subjected to constant hydrostatic pressure but require waterproofing protection. This triple-layered system contains a base layer, a protection course, and a drainage course to ensure maximum coverage. With these additional layers, the risk of puncturing the softer ICF forms is minimized.
E.Proformance is also quick and easy to install, even in wet condition. This helps keep construction schedules moving forward..
Single-sheet waterproofing = amazing
Some sites may be lower risk or less complicated. This is where single sheet waterproofing systems are king. EPRO’s PrimeTak system with [water based primer] is another option for ICF waterproofing. Adding a drainboard to this system can add an extra layer of security draining water away from the walls and protecting against any rocks or debris in the backfill – this can damage the soft ICF forms and permit water to enter.
PrimeTak is an HDPE-backed, self-adhesive rubberized asphalt peel-and-stick post-applied waterproofing membrane. Fast and easily applied, PrimeTak is ideal for both horizontal and vertical waterproofing applications. PrimeTak membrane is a 60-mil strong, pliable, self-adhesive sheet membrane consisting of a 4-mil cross-laminated, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) backing bonded to 56-mils of rubberized asphalt waterproofing compound. PrimeTak is used on concrete foundation walls, split slabs, , tunnels, plaza decks, parking garages and related applications where waterproofing is critical. PrimeTak may also be used on wood, concrete masonry (CMU) structures and Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF).
